Jumada al-Awwal

Jumada al-Awwal — meaning The First of Parched Land — is the 5th month of the Islamic Hijri calendar.

Overview

Jumada al-Awwal is the fifth month of the Islamic Hijri calendar. The name Jumada derives from the Arabic root for parched or dry, traditionally referring to the dry summer months of the Arabian Peninsula. As the calendar is purely lunar, however, Jumada drifts through all four seasons over a thirty-three-year cycle and is no longer associated with any particular weather pattern.

Notable Observances

The month contains no major canonical observances, but it is historically significant as the birth month of Aisha bint Abi Bakr, wife of the Prophet ﷺ and a foundational scholar of hadith and Islamic jurisprudence. Some Sufi traditions also commemorate the urs of various early Sufi masters during Jumada al-Awwal. The month serves as a quiet period of regular worship between the festive Rabi months and the approaching Rajab and Ramadan.
