About the Two Calendar Systems

The Islamic Hijri calendar is a purely lunar calendar consisting of twelve months totaling approximately 354 days. Each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon (hilal), making the calendar approximately 11 days shorter than the solar year. This causes Islamic observances to migrate through the Gregorian seasons over a 33-year cycle. The Hijri epoch begins on 1 Muharram of Year 1 — the year of the Prophet Muhammad's migration (Hijra) from Mecca to Medina, corresponding to July 622 CE.

The Hindu lunar calendar, in contrast, is a lunisolar calendar with periodic intercalary months (adhik maas) that keep the calendar synchronized with the solar year. Festivals therefore broadly remain in the same season but shift by up to a month within their solar period. Multiple regional almanacs — Drik Panchang in North India, Vakya Panchang in South India, Vishuddha Siddhanta in Bengal — calculate the same festival on slightly different dates, reflecting historical and astronomical traditions.
