Hindu Lunar Month · 11th of 12
Magha
Overview
Magha is the eleventh month of the Hindu lunar calendar, typically falling in January or February. The month is one of the most spiritually charged of the Hindu year and is associated with extensive pilgrimage and bathing rituals at sacred rivers, particularly during the Magh Mela held annually at Prayagraj at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers.
Notable Festivals
Vasant Panchami — the spring festival dedicated to the goddess Saraswati — falls on the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Magha and is celebrated with the wearing of yellow clothing and the worship of books, instruments, and learning. The full moon of Magha (Magha Purnima) marks the conclusion of the Magh Mela. Maha Shivaratri — the great night of Shiva — falls in Magha or in the following month of Phalguna, depending on the regional panchang tradition.
